Elderberry has long been associated with immunity in traditional systems of medicine, but we didn’t choose it for its legacy. We chose ElderCraft® black elderberry extract for its clinical validation, sourcing, and solvent-free extraction process that preserves the fruit's natural polyphenols and immune-supporting compounds.

Here’s a look at the scientific evidence that shaped our formulation:

1. Upper respiratory tract health in air travellers

A double-blind, placebo-controlled study on long-haul air passengers showed that ElderCraft® significantly reduced the frequency, duration, and severity of colds and flu, supporting immune defence in high-stress environments.

2. Reduced flu symptoms in influenza-positive patients

In a Norwegian trial, elderberry extract significantly reduced the duration of symptoms and medication use in adults diagnosed with influenza type A or B.

3. Gut health and microbial diversity

An interventional study showed that the extract improved microbial diversity in the gastrointestinal tract, a positive shift for gut health, a known regulator of immunity. It also increased the level of a “good” bacteria called Akkermancia Muciniphila, which is associated with positive health outcomes. The relative abundance of Akkermansia spp. continued to increase even beyond the supplementation period.

4. Symptom relief during a flu outbreak

A double-blind placebo-controlled clinical study was carried out during the influenza outbreak in Panama. Elderberry extract significantly improved symptoms and duration of influenza infections.

5. Healthy ageing via Sirtuin 6 activation

An in vitro study has shown that elderberry extract can activate Sirtuin 6 (SIRT6), a gene involved in DNA repair, telomere maintenance, and gene regulation. SIRT6 has been implicated in longevity, metabolism, DNA-repair, and inflammatory response reduction.

6. Antiviral activity, including SARS-CoV-2

In vitro tests with flu viruses have shown that components present in black elderberry block receptors on blood cells or block the activity of certain enzymes, thereby preventing infection and viral replication. This has been demonstrated in type A influenza viruses (e.g., the H1N1 virus) and SARS-CoV-2, the virus responsible for COVID-19.

7. Immune activation in preclinical studies

The extract has been shown to have immunostimulatory effects. When mice infected with the human type A flu virus were given the extract, they exhibited improved local and systemic immune re­sponses. There was an increase in virus-specific immunoglobulins A and G, along with virus-neutralising antibodies. In a related in vitro study, the extract stimulated the maturation of dendritic cells (DCs), which are vital immune cells for activating infection-fighting T cells.
